Culture

The Stadtmuseum Berlin is one of Europe’s largest museums of urban history and holds a collection of around 4.5 million objects. Across eight locations, including the Märkisches Museum and the Nikolaikirche, it tells the stories of the city together with the people who live here.

The challenge: for a long time, hardly anyone knew this. The umbrella brand had little visibility and felt dated and distant. Yet few institutions are as closely connected to the city as the museum. With the rebranding, we set out to change that.

The new brand strategy places Berlin itself at the centre – with all its stories and contrasts that overlap, contradict one another and never quite align. ‘Berlin comes first for us, and our name and brand show that now, too,’ says Sophie Plagemann, Artistic Director at the Berlin Museum. Renaming the institution ‘Berlin Museum’ was a consistent next step.

We carry this conviction into the visual identity, which consciously builds bridges to everyday life in Berlin and the city’s history. The defining element is a new, flexible wordmark. It draws inspiration from places across the city – from U-Bahn stations and iconic buildings to the local currywurst stand. The colours also reflect Berlin’s distinct character: its materials, light conditions and surfaces.

The result is an identity that unites all eight locations and attracts attention: direct, a little headstrong and always open to people and perspectives. Just like Berlin itself.
